Slavín is a peaceful hilltop memorial & monumental WWII site with panoramic views over Bratislava — a place of remembrance, quiet walks and one of the city’s most beautiful sunsets.
A Place of Memory Above the City
Slavín is a monumental war memorial and cemetery located on a quiet hill above the Old Town. Surrounded by tall trees, elegant villas and peaceful walkways, it combines solemn history with one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Bratislava.
A Monument of European Significance
Completed in 1960, Slavín honours the 6,845 Soviet soldiers who fell during the liberation of Bratislava in April 1945.
The complex consists of:
-
a central obelisk rising 39 metres high,
-
a sculpture of a victorious soldier at the top,
-
ceremonial terraces,
-
and six mass graves arranged with symmetry and dignity.
Despite its monumental scale, the space is calm and contemplative — a place to reflect, walk slowly and appreciate the city from above.
What to Experience
-
Panoramic Views: From the upper terrace you can see the Old Town rooftops, the castle hill, the Danube and even Austria on clear days.
-
Quiet Garden Atmosphere: Mature pines and landscaped paths create a tranquil setting ideal for peaceful walks.
-
Sculptural Details: Reliefs and inscriptions around the monument highlight key moments of WWII history.
-
Sunset Spot: In the evening, the terraces turn golden, offering one of the most atmospheric viewpoints in the city.
💡 Fun fact: Slavín stands at 260 metres above sea level — higher than Bratislava Castle — making it one of the highest accessible points in the wider centre.
