Presidential Palace and Gardens (Grassalkovich Palace)

  • Parks & Gardens

The Presidential Palace, an 18th-century Rococo landmark, and its public gardens form one of Bratislava’s most elegant spaces – a place of history, greenery, and quiet moments in the city centre.

Where History Meets Everyday Life

Built in the 18th century for Count Antal Grassalkovich, this elegant Rococo palace is now the official residence of the President of Slovakia.
Although the interior is not open to the public, the building and its gardens play an important role in city life. The front courtyard hosts official ceremonies, while the rear park is one of the most beloved green oases in central Bratislava.

The Palace

The palace was completed in 1760 and quickly became a centre of social life for the Hungarian aristocracy.
Visitors can admire its Rococo façade, ornate gates and fountain crowned with the Earth globe – symbolising Slovakia’s openness to the world.
On state holidays or open-door events, parts of the palace occasionally open to the public (dates are usually announced on the presidential website).

The Gardens

Behind the palace stretches the Presidential Garden, designed in a French formal style with tree-lined alleys, fountains, and sculptures.
Locals come here to relax, jog, or read under the chestnut trees. In spring and summer, the flower beds are among the most photographed in the city.

🪴 Fun fact: The park’s original layout dates back to the 18th century, when Grassalkovich organised musical performances here – even Joseph Haydn is said to have conducted concerts in these gardens.

In the Neighbourhood

Right next to the garden is Freedom Square (Námestie slobody) with its large “Fountain of Union,” one of the symbols of Bratislava’s socialist-era architecture.
A short walk down Hodžovo Square leads to the Old Town, while heading uphill offers views of Bratislava Castle.

Our Tip

The best view of the palace façade is from the pedestrian bridge over the busy Hodžovo roundabout — early morning or sunset light gives the copper roof and garden trees a beautiful glow.
